Temperance Brennan was once very much one of my role models. She was a fairly closed-off character, who struggled with emotional intimacy due to abandonment issues, who buried herself in her work and dedicated her life to helping other people rather than herself. She had these walls up, but could also be sassy and sarcastic and funny. She laughed with her best friend and cried over her mother and got angry, so angry, at the kind of awful people she came up against. For the first three seasons, her character arc was sound, and we saw her gradually start to open up, this lonely sole learning to work with a team and love them. And then somehow that changed. The whole tone of the show took on this weird goofy theme as opposed to the black comedy it was before, and poor old Brennan was transformed into a one-dimensional, emotionally stunted child. She was infantilized so that we could laugh at her socially inept ways and Booth could fix it and there would be romantic scenes as he, never developing himself, showed her how she was supposed to be. I had to stop watching the show because it basically turned into lol look at Brennan being a goofy failure. I don’t know if they’ve found a way to fix it. Unless they do, I will forever mourn the loss of my Bones.
